A 13-year-old Edwards was at Lord’s in 1993 to watch Karen Smithies lift the World Cup for England for the second time. England also won the inaugural trophy in England in 1973. Yesterday at the North Sydney Oval, Edwards’ England won a repeat of the 1993 final by beating New Zealand by four wickets in a tense encounter. England had not even reached a final since. Now Edwards joins Smithies and Rachel Heyhoe-Flint as England’s World Cup-winning captains - a feat any English men are still to achieve. “In 1993 I watched the women win the World Cup at Lord’s, and I dreamed of doing it myself,” Edwards told ECBtv in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. “I thought I might have missed my chance after three World Cups, but I haven’t. “I love playing cricket, and captaining my country is the ultimate honour.” Edwards also had a word for Claire Taylor, the player of the tournament who has been the bedrock of England’s batting for a number of years. “She’s been superb for a number of years now. She’s secured her number one batting space now. “She’s brilliant for the team and someone we really rely on.”
The women's ‘pairs tournament’ where five couples competed against each other.

Women enter the fray Frankie Perry

The new CFPD Women's Manager Nikki Pinner, takes her turn at the crease, not bad for her first time.
Linda Lane takes control of the morning game, and shows the lads just how the game should be played.
